Staging Done Right
Start Date: 2/19/2014
End Date: 2/19/2014

TOPIC: Staging Done Right
(Rescheduled from original date, January 21st, due to inclement weather.)

Lunch Sponsor: Kubisys

Description:
The ILTA Technology Survey shows that the rate of change in IT is increasing more than ever. Whether it's configuration changes, new software features, upgrades or patches, the pressure is on to manage and deliver more and more changes! You need a new way of thinking and a new tool to face these challenges. Kubisys Thin Capture has been heralded as a "game changer" in helping IT do just that.

Thin Capture is a powerful tool for creating and maintaining true staging environments for business-critical applications. It rapidly builds staging based on current live production environments -- ensuring accuracy and relevance -- and reduces risk involved in deployment of new software updates, patches and even configuration changes. Thin Capture's ability to provide production-like environments on demand allows law firms to cost effectively:

  • Perform accurate end-to-end testing of rollouts without affecting production
  • Create sandboxes for test-driving complex application configuration changes
  • Unleash developer productivity and creativity by allowing them to work in parallel within multiple independent test environments

Please join us for an overview, live product demo, legal vertical case studies and a technical Q&A session.

Presenters:
Dr. Shinichi Urano
, a theoretical physicist turned entrepreneur, is one of the co-founders of Kubisys -- where he wears many hats. He previously spent many years working closely with development and operations teams in a software development firm, where he first noticed disparate cultures and the resulting inefficiencies. Shinichi was instrumental in the original development of the Thin Capture solution and is passionate about Kubisys' mission to help IT deliver value more quickly and safely.

Jeff Martinik is the Senior Vice President of Sales at Kubisys, and has been instrumental in the success of their go-to-market strategy implementation. With over 25 years in the IT industry, he has extensive experience and exceptional strengths in hiring, managing and developing relationships, staff development and training programs. Jeff is a believer in the DevOps philosophy, and is a mentor and coach to many others who strive to push IT as a driving force in businesses today.

Happy Hour Social and Discussion: WAN Virtualization
Start Date: 02/26/2014
End Date: 02/26/2014

TOPIC: Happy Hour Social and Discussion: WAN Virtualization

Drink and Appetizer Sponsors: PhillyCom, Inc. and Talari Networks

Description:
In today's connected world, your clients depend on a reliable, high-quality network to get their jobs done. Poor quality connections can mean time and money lost due to slow applications, dropped calls and session timeouts; and, in many firms, losing a network connection means losing the ability to work altogether. In order to avoid these costly disruptions, most law firms have been forced to over-engineer their networks, oversubscribe to expensive WAN links and overpay for standby backup links. But now there is a new way to achieve the WAN reliability, application quality and bandwidth today's law firms require, all while staying under budget.

Please join us for this happy hour discussion with Talari Networks, winner of the Best of Interop 2013 award for Performance Optimization and Testing. Hear how the company's technology enables network managers to aggregate multiple WAN connections -- existing private WANs, such as MPLS, and any type of Internet WAN links (DSL, cable, fiber, Metro Ethernet, etc.) -- into a virtual WAN. Talari's WAN Virtualization solution uses end-to-end algorithms to do dynamic, real-time traffic engineering, and it's able to react in sub-seconds to link failures and congestion-related network problems. Using WAN Virtualization, firms can build a WAN that is less expensive, offers much higher bandwidth and has lower ongoing operational costs than typical proprietary, single-vendor WANs.

Presenters:
Ken Meuer
, Senior Solutions Engineer, Talari Networks

David Ayers, Regional Sales Manager, Talari Networks

Tom Desilets, President, PhillyCom, Inc.

Guest speaker John Sroka, the CIO at Duane Morris LLP, will provide an overview of his firm's "Proof of Concept" results, as well as the recently deployed solution at Duane Morris.

End Date: 2/27/2014

TOPIC: Personal is the New Professional: BYOD

Lunch Sponsor: Birch Horton Bittner & Cherot

Description:
The bring your own device (BYOD) movement has its challenges. Devices previously considered "for personal use only" have made their way into our enterprise environment, and we are now responsible for balancing the efficiency gains they provide against their potential security risks. It sometimes seems like new mobile devices are added on a weekly basis and attorneys want to be able to access their work on all of them -- at any time and from any place. How do we accommodate BYOD in a secure way?

Join your Alaska peers for a lively roundtable discussion on managing these mobile devices. We will touch on what firms are using, what policies they have in place, how firms are managing expectations and how they're keeping up with the technology.

Description:
Law firms (of all sizes) are very different than manufacturing, financial services, retail and other businesses. Their assets are people. Their output is advice. At the core, their business is knowledge. So it seems obvious that such firms should invest in the people, tools, and processes required to manage their knowledge and thereby better enable their professionals to serve their clients. But knowledge management (KM), like other activities not directly related to serving clients, takes time and money. Because KM projects compete for firm resources with other potential investments, firm leaders need to assess the relative importance of those projects and make investment decisions accordingly.

Thus, while firms may vary in the degree to which they use financial metrics in approving and assessing projects, firm KM leaders will almost certainly succeed more when they measure the returns of KM projects (both at the proposal stage and after the project has been completed) and pitch and deliver projects with substantial returns. But how do you develop the financial metrics to support the proposals and then deliver on the projections?

This presentation --by two of the leading KM commentators in the US-- is intended to help KM leaders by explaining how to show the positive financial impact of applying KM at law firms. These tips apply to firms of all sizes. There will be time for discussion of the issues with the presenters following the presentation.

Presenters:
Jack Bostelman practiced law in New York for 30 years as a partner of pre-eminent AmLaw 20 firm Sullivan & Cromwell before founding KM/JD Consulting LLC. Jack knows how law firms are managed and how lawyers share knowledge. During his tenure at Sullivan & Cromwell, Jack coordinated the firm?s extensive securities practice worldwide, managed a practice group, was a member of the firm?s opinion committee and its administrative committee, oversaw the IT department and was on the faculty for the lawyer training program. Jack also supervised the firm?s knowledge strategy initiatives for two decades - using existing workflow and designing new procedures to capture and make available relevant knowledge, selecting and implementing supporting software, and marketing the systems within the firm. As a securities lawyer, Jack was recognized as a New York Super Lawyer from 2006 through 2010. Jack is currently Chair of the Knowledge Strategy Committee of the American Bar Association?s Law Practice Management Section.

Chris Boyd is the senior director of professional services at Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, where he leads the firm?s attorney recruiting, knowledge management, and professional development programs. These programs help the firm recruit, develop, and retain the best attorneys for its clients and culture, and provide these attorneys with the tools they need to deliver maximum value to clients. Chris previously was a corporate and securities associate at Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, representing technology and life science companies. In this role, he handled numerous initial public offerings, venture financings, and acquisitions for his clients. Chris left the practice of law in 1997 and assumed the leadership of knowledge management programs at several companies before returning to the firm in 2001. He is also Vice President, Knowledge Management Peer Group, International Legal Technology Association.
