ILTA/ALA: The Changing Role of the Legal Secretary -

TOPIC: ILTA/ALA: The Changing Role of the Legal Secretary

Please bring your own lunch.

Description:
The practice of law has changed rapidly over the past 15 years, and new technologies and business processes have impacted the role of the legal secretary significantly. A multigenerational workforce and recent economic uncertainties coupled with the explosion of new technology mean the pace of change will only increase in the next few years.

Please join moderator Terri Oppelt, CLM, panelists Michelle Liffman, SPHR who will represent the large firm perspective, Lydia Tavera with the small firm perspective, Dave Neesen representing IT, and Karen Maheu covering the recruiter's perspective for a lively discussion. Topics of discussion will include:

  • Understanding how technology and efficiency are driving change
  • Discovering the changing expectations of clients, attorneys and secretaries
  • Determining ways to redesign the role of the legal secretary, including setting goals, analyzing needs and developing the skills to close the gap

Inspired by the January 2013 ILTA webinar, this session is presented jointly by ILTA and the GLA ALA. You do not need to be a member of both organizations to attend, and you only need to RSVP with one.

Security Resource Management (SRM): The Next Big Thing? -

TOPIC: Security Resource Management (SRM): The Next Big Thing?

        Lunch Sponsor: Kaliber Data Security

        Description:
In addition to trying to keep up with shifting regulatory requirements related to IT security, law firms are under increasing pressure from clients and potential clients to provide demonstrable evidence of good IT security practices. While many firms have established some level of IT security management, some still rely on ad hoc systems (spreadsheets, stand-alone databases, etc.), have access to limited metrics and dashboards, and lack consistent reporting.

A set of management tools gaining traction promise to do for the IT security management process what CRM did for the customer engagement process. We are calling these tools Security Resource Management (SRM). Similar to CRM, SRM is a business resource that enables IT staffs to implement, organize and manage companies' cybersecurity and compliance efforts more effectively while providing real-time insights into risk profile and compliance status. SRM systems streamline business processes, protect revenue sources by building and reinforcing trust with existing and potential clients, and reduce expenses by enabling more efficient management of security and compliance activity.

SRM is beneficial for any firm in which customer attraction, retention and management are vital, and non-public client, employee or corporate information needs to be protected. Come learn about the SRM process and platforms that help manage and track risks and compliance.

        Presenter:
        Ken Leeser
, CISM and President of Kaliber Data Security, attributes his success in helping firms improve their information risk management programs to the conviction that IT security is not merely a technical issue, but rather a process integral to a firm's success. His background blends technical, business risk and operations expertise. Ken founded Kaliber Data Security and developed the concept of security resource management to better equip firms to achieve, maintain and demonstrate security compliance while significantly improving their security postures.
